Ayrton Senna - just a driver or a Saint?

Ayrton Senna - just a driver or a Saint?
Recently released documentary1 about Ayrton and my engagement in exploring sports astrology in general and Formula 1 in particular, has spurred a true curiousity and admiration of this person. What was he like in real life can be found out by reading articles on the internet or watching the already mentioned documentary, but what was his astrological profile? That's what we will try to find out in this article.

Accoding to Astro DataBank2 Senna's birth parameters are 21 March 1960 at 02:35, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Rated with AA they seem higly credible also to me. So his birth chart looks like this:

Ayrton Senna birth chart

Now, what comes into sight at the very first glance? To me it is Neptune right on the MC, Sun in the very first degree of Aries and Mars rising. These three factors are very vivid astrological signatures that boldly describe Ayrton. He was extemely fierce and competitive on the racing track, yet very spiritual and compassionate when it came down to his own existance, relationship with God and helping others in need, especially children stuck in poverty back home in his homeland Brazil. Hence, here goes bold Martian nature coupled with tremendously deep Neptunic vibe radiating from his personality. With Neptune on MC he was born to carry out a mission that transcended just his role in this world as a professional Formula-1 racing driver.

Some of the statements made by him3 seem to drive my point further. Here are just some of them.

  • "Racing, competing, it's in my blood. It's part of me, it's part of my life; I have been doing it all my life and it stands out above everything else."
  • "The danger sensation is exciting. The challenge is to find new dangers."
  • "Winning is the most important. Everything is consequence of that."
  • "If you have God on your side, everything becomes clear."

So what other secrets are revealed by examining his chart? Let's start with Sun. Born right after Vernal Equinox, he has his Sun in the very first degree of Aries, 0°36' to be precise. First degree of every sign is very influential and filled with outwardly expressing energy. Plus, this is Aries, the starting point of the Zodiac. Mythologically speaking, this is the place where Sun experiences its full rebirth and finally light forces get the upper hand competing with dark foces. With this in mind I think it is not exaggerated to compare him with a messianic figure at least on some level. After all, it is the 'Aries Point' which is also of a high significance to astrologers of Uranian system, and he is being considered the all time greatest racing driver who represented an incredible era in the history of racing.
Moon is in Capricorn and conjunct Saturn. Could it be his pedantic qualities? Caring about the details and going into depth with great scrutinity. That would be very much in line how Mika Hakkinen described him4.
Mercury retrograde and in Pisces. Retrograde Mercury would denote that his thinking and mental processes are directed more inwardly rather than outwardly; Pisces in turn adds a intuitive quality to his thinking. I guess, such a combination exemplifies his intuitive grasp of the situation that is refered to as "God's given sixth sense of knowing where the grip is before entering the turn"4.
Mars is rising and in Aquarius. The rising of this planet amplifies its effect an makes it play more vivid role in Ayrton's horoscope, makes him be associated with it, even though it is rather far from Ascendant in this case. And what about Mars in Aquarius? Well, I'd say it's a placement that hints of skills with technics, love of speed, strong urge for freedom and, yes, also sharing wealth.

When I grew up and payed some attention to F1 racing, my favorite was Michael Schumacher, but after I got acquainted with some old footage of Ayrton and his driving, I almost have to quote Jeremy Clarkson5 by saying that he was spectacular each time he got into car.
